Verbs study 03

Today is March 18 and we will study verbs once again, ready?

Last time we learned how to obtain the polite ~ます for from the plain form (or dictionary form if you prefer). Today we are going to study the negative form for both the polite and the plain form.

01) Negative form

a)五段動詞 - Plain form
Easy, just add ~あない to the stem.
例えば:
Plain form       Negative
行く いく 行かない
読む よむ 読まない

b)一段動詞 - Plain form
Easy also, just add ~ない to the stem.
例えば:
Plain form       Negative
食べる たべう 食べない
考える かんがえる 考えない

c)Polite form (for both classes)
Easiest. Change the ~ます for ~ません.
例えば:
Polite form      Negarive
行きます いきます 行ません
食べます たべます 食べません
読みます よみます 読みません
考えます かんがえます 考えません

One note here: For the 五段動詞 ending in ~au, ~iu, or ~ou, remember to add the omitted ~w before adding the ~あない to the stem.
例えば:
Plain form       Negative
しまう              しまわない
買う かう 買わない
言う いう 言わない
思う おもう 思わない

Enough for today because we need to understand it very well. Let's look some for examples in texts in the Internet, ok? We are bit by bit studying everything we need about verbs. Next will be the past tense construction.

じゃあ、またね。
